Motherlode's Motherlode finally has a guardian — a three-phase boss fight now stands between you and the gold, plus two new underground threats to watch for on the way down.

  • The Motherlode is no longer a free grab — a rock-and-ore guardian called the Tommyknocker now blocks the chamber, and you'll need to beat it down with your pick before you can claim the gold.
  • The Tommyknocker fights in three stages: it charges you directly at first, then starts bringing the ceiling down as it weakens, and finally starts venting gas pockets when it's nearly beaten — each stage telegraphs before it hits.
  • Two new hazards join the mine: a burrowing mole that ambushes from underfoot in the Quartz Caves, and a cave spider that drops from the ceiling when you walk beneath it.
  • Beating the guardian rewards you with a burst of rich gold and diamond ore on top of whatever's already in your bag.

Motherlode is now playable on a phone — landscape gate, thumb stick and on-screen DIG/JUMP/TIMBER controls, and shop panels that finally fit.

  • Play on a phone: drag anywhere to move, with DIG, JUMP and TIMBER buttons under your right thumb and pause on the left.
  • A fourth button appears when it's useful — USE at the assay office and general store doors, BLAST once you're carrying a charge.
  • The General Store and Assay Office panels now scroll instead of running off the top and bottom of a phone screen, so you can reach every item and the way out.
  • On-screen hints now match whatever you're actually holding — keyboard, controller or thumbs — and cinematics gained tappable NEXT and SKIP.

Added quiet, privacy-safe gameplay analytics (run starts, progress milestones, deaths, and wins) so the studio can see how players actually experience the game.

  • Motherlode now quietly reports how each dig ends — how deep you got, what did you in, and whether you hauled the Motherlode home — so the studio can see where prospectors thrive or get buried.

The street of Providence Gulch is now solid hardpan — one mine entrance, and the shops can never be stranded over a pit again.

  • The whole surface is now a layer of unbreakable hardpan crust, so you can no longer dig away the ground under the assay office or the general store and leave their doors hanging over a hole.
  • The mine head in the middle of town is the one and only way into the mine — you cannot carve extra entrances any more, and you come home the way you went in.
  • Swinging at the crust now clangs, throws sparks and tells you what you have hit, instead of silently doing nothing.
  • If you are standing under the crust away from the shaft, the game points you at the mine head with an arrow and a distance — and during the collapse escape the shaft throws a beam of daylight so you can steer for it.
  • Runs in progress carry straight over with their gold, gear, timber and tunnels intact: the street is capped on load, and if you had dug holes in it the game tells you how many of yours it filled in.

Dig with confidence — plant timber ladders so you can always climb out, and see a real ladder at the mine mouth.

  • You now carry timber and can plant climbable ladders anywhere underground (F on keyboard, right bumper on a controller) — no more digging yourself into a pit you can't escape.
  • Ladders anchor to nearby rock and chain straight up, and prying one loose gives the plank back, so a few timbers always get you to the surface.
  • Timber restocks for free every time you're topside, but planting costs weight, time and lantern oil, so the "one more vein" gamble is still very much on.
  • The mine-head shaft finally shows a real ladder you can watch yourself climb down and back out of.
  • The prospector, headframe and critters lost their faint purple outline, the sunset sky no longer has a visible seam, and the surface signs no longer crowd your readouts.
